Venice Marco Polo Airport

Venice Marco Polo Airport

History of Venice Marco Polo Airport

Though boasting a relatively long history, it is only in the past few years that Venice's Marco Polo has grown to become a major European airport.

Driven largely by the rise in cheap flights across Europe, the airport now welcomes almost eight million passengers a year, making it the fourth-busiest in the whole of Italy.

Indeed, its success has been so marked that its modern passenger terminal, opened only in 2002, is already close to capacity, though any further expansion plans have yet to be confirmed.

Travelling to Venice Marco Polo Airport

Links between Marco Polo airport and Venice's historic city centre are both efficient and affordable.

Importantly, the airport itself is connected to the local Mestre railway station, from where passengers can travel into the heart of the city in a matter of minutes.

However, the most memorable means of connecting from the airport to Venice is by water taxi.

Regular shuttles depart from outside the terminal and travel directly to the iconic Piazza San Marco.

Airlines flying from Venice Marco Polo Airport

As one of the world's most celebrated tourist destinations, Venice's airport welcomes dozens of airlines operating flights from across the globe each day.

Italy's national carrier Alitalia offers direct internal flights to the capital, Rome, while low-cost rival Air One also operates budget connections within the country, including those to Bari, Naples and Palermo on the island of Sicily.

British Airways, which flies to Venice from both London's Gatwick and Heathrow airports, is one of a number of national carriers from across the world to offer services to the Italian city.

Joining it on the tarmac at Marco Polo are Czech Airlines, Air France, Aer Lingus, Finnair and Iberia, all of which operate direct flights from their respective capitals.

Alongside these, a number of budget airlines have emerged offering cheap international flights to Venice over the past few years.

These include easyJet, which offers services from the UK as well as from France and Rome, Air Berlin and Jet2.com.

Long-haul routes are also offered by Delta Air Lines, which flies to Atlanta and New York's JFK, as well as by Emirates and US Airways, which fly to Dubai and Philadelphia respectively.
