Tallinn Airport

History of Tallinn Airport

Construction of Estonia's largest airport began in earnest in 1932, allowing it to start taking flights just four years later.

Used sporadically for the duration of the Second World War, the post-war years saw Estonia become part of Eastern Europe and, as such, up until 1989, the only airline flying in and out of Tallinn was Soviet carrier Aeroflot.

With the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union, foreign airlines followed the lead of Scandinavia's SAS in offering services to Tallinn Airport, though it was only with the low-cost flights revolution of the late 90s that its expansion began in earnest.

After the terminal building benefited from an ambitious modernisation plan in 1999, work was then carried out to expand the whole site significantly over the course of 2008.

Travelling to Tallinn Airport

With no train link servicing the route, most passengers arriving at Tallinn Airport head downtown on the express Bus Number 2.
Cheap and quick, the bus service operates to connect with the first and last flights of the day.

Car hire facilities are also available at the airport, while numerous taxis wait outside the terminal building to whisk travellers to the city centre in the quickest time possible.

Airlines flying from Tallinn Airport

Flag carrier Estonian Air has been the major presence at Tallinn Airport since the country gained its independence from Soviet influence, offering both domestic and international flights to a number of destinations.

Among the European destinations offered by the carrier are Barcelona, Copenhagen, Dublin, Milan, London-Gatwick, Paris, Rome and Vienna.

Over recent years, the airline has been joined by a number of low-cost carriers.

These include easyJet, which offers cheap flights to the Estonian capital from London Stansted, nairBaltic, which flies to Riga and Vilnius and Norwegian Air Shuttle.

KLM, Lufthansa, Czech Airlines and Finnair also operate flights in and out of Tallinn Airport.
