Seville Airport

History of Seville Airport

Work on Seville Airport started in 1915, one year after the first flight between the Iberian Peninsula and north Africa landed on an improvised airfield on the same site.

In the years immediately following the arrival of the first commercial flight in 1919, Seville enjoyed frequent air links with Madrid and a number of cities in neighbouring Portugal, with 1929 seeing work begin on a permanent hanger and terminal that resemble the airport of today.

The early 1930s saw the airport welcome a number of domestic and international flights, including services from Barcelona, the Canary Islands and Germany, though this progress was brought to an abrupt halt with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, which saw Seville used as an air base for Nationalist troops arriving from nearby Morocco.

Under the Franco regime, new asphalt runways were added in the 1940s, followed by a new terminal building and control tower in the 1950s, though these have all been either replaced or updated, most notably for the 1992 Universal Exhibition held in the Andalusian city.

Travelling to Seville Airport

Seville Airport boasts excellent links with both the region of Andalusia as well as a number of destinations within Spain and Portugal.

From the terminal building, half-hourly buses take passengers into downtown Seville, with a journey time of just under 40 minutes.

As well as serving the historic city centre, the buses also stop at the Santa Justa railway station, from where passengers are able to travel on to a number of popular holiday destinations within the south of Spain.

Meanwhile, those passengers flying into Seville Airport and opting to book a hire car at the terminal building are able to benefit from the links offered by the E05 road, which runs up to Madrid.

Using the International E-road network, visitors can enjoy easy access to Jerez, Malaga and Cadiz, as well as cross the border into Portugal.

Airlines flying from Seville Airport

Though only the second-busiest airport in Andalusia, behind Malaga, Seville nevertheless handles some 4.5 million passengers a year, a significant proportion of whom arrive on cheap flights.

Irish budget carrier Ryanair offers the most links to the UK, flying to Bristol, Liverpool and London-Stansted, as well as to Bologna, Cagliari, Dublin, Frankfurt, Malta, Marrakech, Milan, Pisa, Reus, Rome and Weeze.

At the same time, Spanish budget airline Veuling offers international flights to Amsterdam, Brussels, Cassablanca, London-Heathrow, Paris, Rome and Venice, in addition to domestic flights to A Coruna, Barcelona, Ibiza, Tenerife and Valencia.

Meanwhile, Spanair flies to Barcelona and Lanzarote, Brussels Airlines flies to the Belgian capital and Air Europa offers direct services to a number of Canary Islands destinations.
