Cyprus Larnaca International Airport

Cyprus Larnaca International Airport

History of Cyprus Larnaca International Airport

Cyprus' principal air terminal has its roots in the ongoing political difficulties facing the island, specifically the Turkish invasion of 1974 which prompted the closure of Nicosia International Airport.

Duly opened in 1975, the airport was originally nothing more than a hastily-built departure hall and a short tarmac runway.

However, as the island has become a major European tourist destination, expansion has been rapid, with work approved back in 1998 still ongoing.

Now welcoming some five million passengers a year, plans are in place to construct a new terminal and upgrade transport links with the rest of the island.

Travelling to Cyprus Larnaca International Airport

Given the size of Cyprus, all parts of the island are within easy reach of Larcana International Airport.

Passengers opting to use public transport can make use of regular shuttle bus services from outside the terminal building to the nearby towns of Limassol and Nicosia, with up to 30 services a day running over the busy summer months.

Alternatively, taxis are readily available and able to take passengers to more remote parts of the island, though the convenience comes at a price.

Airlines flying from Cyprus Larnaca International Airport

Dozens of flights a day take off and land at Larcana International Airport, with millions of holidaymakers a year heading to the island to enjoy some guaranteed sunshine and experience its rich history and culture.

By far the biggest presence at the airport is that of Cyprus Airways, with the local carrier offering both domestic and international flights.

Among the destinations offered by the airline are Amsterdam, Athens, Dubai, Kuwait, London, Rome and Zurich.

At the same time, major rival Eurocypria Airlines flies to around 20 destinations across Europe, including Belfast, Birmingham, London, Manchester and Warsaw.

As with most leading holiday destinations, Cyprus has also witnessed a boom in low-cost flights over recent years, particularly when it comes to air links within the Mediterranean.

Airlines such as JetX, Sun D'Oro and TAROM join more recognisable names such as easyJet, Jet2.com and Smart Wings in offering cheap flights in and out of Cyprus.

Additionally, a number of national carriers also fly from Cyprus Larnaca International, such as British Airways, Emirates, Alitalia, Czech Airlines, KLM, Swiss International and Royal Jordanian.
